Laos says more time needed at border checkpoints with Thailand

The tourism-minister of Thailand says tourism industry representatives in Laos have asked for longer operating hours at border posts between the two nations. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said the request was made at a recent meeting with industry representatives in Laos.

The minister continued by saying the Lao party wants Thailand to extend the operating hours from 22:00 to 24:00. She noted that the reason for the request is that processing travellers at checkpoints on the Laos side takes longer.

Ms Wattanavrangkul added that the Lao agents had told her speed limits were strictly enforced in Laos and journey times from checkpoints to towns were lengthier. If the request gets the green light it will apply to border crossings such as Nong Khai-Vientiane and Mukdahan-Savannakhet.

The extra two hours would benefit both Thai and Laos nationals as well as the many foreign nationals who travel between the two countries every day. 12GO ASIA says the crossings between the two countries are via Friendship Bridges across the Mekong River and this enhances the sense of adventure.
