Ho Chi Minh says free visa offer for Europeans should be expanded

Tourism bureau officials in Ho Chi Minh City say the Vietnamese government ought to extend the free visa period for select European citizens by another five years. The current programme giving passport-holders of five European nations fee-free visas is due to expire a month from today.

The Tourism Association in Ho Chi Minh has submitted a request asking the government to expand the current one-year promotion to five years so that it will expire on 30 June 2022. The association also says the visa-free period should be doubled from 15 to 30 days.

Nguyen Thi Khanh is the Tourism Association’s chairperson. At a meeting with People’s Council representatives last week, she explained that a five-year extension would allow travel firms to formulate long-term marketing campaigns.

Under the terms of the current concession, citizens from the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain do not have to pre-apply for visas to visit Vietnam. Instead, when they arrive at a designated gateway to the country, they are granted a gratis 15-day entry permit.
