Krabi authorities say tourists face penalties for stealing coral

Maritime authorities in southern Krabi Province have cautioned tourists that it is against the law to take coral and clam shells from national parks. The director of the Krabi regional office of the Thai Marine and Coastal Resources Department says any violators face arrest and fines.

Witthaya Khunson noted that warning signs had been posted up at Krabi Airport and in several other locations including national parks. The airport signs say carrying shells and coral onto flights is not allowed.

The warning comes hot on the heels of an announcement that inspectors at the airport have confiscated a ton of shells and coral from tourists over the past four months. The authorities claim the bulk of the confiscated souvenirs had been picked up from Hat Nopparat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park.

The Andaman Sea and Phang Nga Bay region around Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun is noted for its marine life and beautiful corals. But, as the 12GO ASIA travel team notes, it is strictly a case a case of look but don’t touch.
