The AoT shut off a 1,000-metre section of the east runway on 3 March to allow essential repair work and maintenance to be carried out. Final safety tests and an inspection tour were conducted yesterday before the runway got the green light.
The runway reopened today and Mr Duangratana noted that the airport’s two runways were already handling their maximum quota of 68 flights an hour. The temporary runway shutdown meant Suvarnabhumi was only able to handle 60 flights per hour.
This had an impact on flight arrivals and departures and there were numerous delays. The disrupted timetables led Thai Airways to announce it would be waiving flight change fees for passengers on flights affected by the delays.
Suvarnabhumi International Airport is a hub for flights connecting most destinations in Southeast Asia. 12GO ASIA sells advance tickets on routes from Suvarnabhumi to the likes of Phuket, Yangon, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Siem Reap.
