Vietnam aviation authority requests Ho Chi Minh City airport upgrade

Civil Aviation Authorities in Vietnam have put the finishing touches to a proposal to upgrade Ho Chi Minh City’s Airport. The CAA has submitted a final draught to the Transport Ministry to carry out an expansion which will increase annual passenger capacity by 15 million.

If the plan is given approval, Tan Son Nhat International will gain an extra passenger terminal and increased runaways and aircraft taxiways. The proposal also calls for the number of aircraft bays to be increased to 80 and a new dedicated vehicle access overpass.

THE CAA noted that passenger numbers of 32 million in 2016  far exceeded the 25 million Tan Son Nhat is designed for. The CAA proposal noted all expansion work needed to be completed by 2020 to keep pace with soaring passenger numbers.

The Transport Ministry has already given the green light for the construction of a new airport to serve Ho Chi Minh. If everything goes according to plan, Long Thanh Airport will welcome its first passengers in 2025.

12GO ASIA notes that Ho Chi Minh City is the hub for travel in southern Vietnam. 12GO ASIA is a leading supplier of tickets to the city from locations including Nha Trang, Hanoi, Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
