New boss of Vietnam Railways Corp promises big change

The incoming boss of Vietnam’s national rail services operator has pledged to improve reservations and travel experiences. Vu Anh Minh told media reporters the advanced seat and sleeping berth reservations system would be overhauled to provide more convenience.

He continued by saying that even though rail had to compete with road and air passenger and cargo providers, trains still offered higher degrees of safety, convenience and cost effectiveness. He noted that train stations were mostly located in town and city centres and were therefore easier to get to than airports or even bus terminals.

Vu Anh Minh continued by saying rail passengers could travel with more luggage than on buses or trains and there wasn’t the rigmarole of checking in for a flight when boarding trains. He finished off by saying fares for Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City trains might have to be reduced in order to better compete with low cost airlines.

The Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City train journey has been labelled one of Asia’s most picturesque by travel book publisher Rough Guides. The 12GO travel team says highlights en route include Lang Co Bay, soaring mountains and glimpses of the sparkling waters of the South China Sea.
