ASEAN Puppet Festival to start in Bangkok on Thursday

Thailand’s Culture Ministry is preparing to lay the red carpet to welcome puppetry troupes for the 2017 ASEAN Puppet Festival due to kick off on Thursday. The 12GO ASIA team says puppetry shows will be held at four different locations in Bangkok with the grand finales scheduled for Tuesday 25 April.

The ministry says 50 puppet troupes from ASEAN bloc nations such as Cambodia, Myanmar and the Philippines as well as home-grown Thai ones will be attending. Free admission gives the chance of seeing the likes of the Joe Louis Theatre enact Mahajanaka with hun lakorn puppets and the wizardry of Singapore’s Paper Monkey Theatre.

Performance times have been staggered so that audiences can take in a full cornucopia on one day if they wish. Daily performances at the Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Centre run between 13:00 and 16:00 and are followed by ones at the National Theatre from 16:00 to 21:00.

Jessadabordin Pavilion is across from Ratchadamnoen Avenue’s Golden Temple and is the setting for additional shows at the same time as at the National Theatre. Further renditions will take place at Santi Chaiprakarn Park between 19:30 and 20:30.
