Bangkok bus stations brace for floods of returning Songkran revellers

Thailand’s public bus operator says Bangkok stations are expected to be inundated with travellers returning from celebrating Songkran in their home towns.  The assistant head of the Transport Company says up to 200,000 passengers are expected to arrive at the capital's three main bus stations today.

Nopparat Karunyavanich warned that most will arrive on night buses from 04:00 onwards and there will be a second busy period from 16:00 to 20:00. He added that the Morchit terminus for buses from the north and northeast is bracing for the arrival of 80,000 passengers or more.

Mr Karunyavanich carried on by saying the other two terminals, Ekkamai and the Sai Tai Mai Southern, are expecting a similar influx between them. He finished off by saying the Transport Company had asked taxi cooperatives and other public transport operators to make sure there are enough vehicles and drivers to take the arriving passengers to their final destinations in Bangkok.

12GO ASIA notes that Songkran is Thailand’s biggest annual festival and is typically a five-day annual holiday for most. Quite a large proportion of the population use the long holiday to travel and this always puts pressure on public transportation.
