Cambodia bus operators promise no fare hikes for Khmer New Year

Cambodia’s Ministry of Transport registered bus operators have promised not to jack up ticket prices for the Khmer New Year holiday. Secretary of state for transport, Tauch Chankosal, said the 29 companies had all agreed that while there would be no discounted fares over the holiday, they would not tack on surcharges.

Ministry officials met with Cambodia Bus Association representatives on Monday to work out a deal. Mr Chankosal said the bus companies were asked to help the Cambodian people to travel to their home provinces without the added burden of paying inflated prices to get there.

He did note that the agreement only covered affiliated bus companies. He carried on by saying companies and drivers offering taxi and passenger van services were harder to regulate. Cambodia Bus Association director Chem Chomnan echoed Mr Chankosal sentiments and claimed those outside the ministry’s jurisdiction always raised prices at peak holiday times.

Chaul Chnam Thmey is the Cambodian New Year Festival and is being celebrated between the 14 and 16 April. 12GO ASIA’s principal travel partner in the country is Giant Ibis. Prices for tickets with this operator are the same at any time of the year and are sold on a first come, first served basis.
