Thailand Laos Vietnam move closer to tri country bus routes

Vietnam’s roads authority has announced the completion of surveys assessing the feasibility of a bus route from the nation’s Ha Tinh Province to Bangkok. A spokesperson told media representatives the route would traverse Laos and cross into Thailand on the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge III.

The bridge spans the Mekong River and links the Lao town of Thakhek and Nakhon Phanom in Thailand. From the latter, it is another 700kms to the Thai capital city of Bangkok.

The survey on the tri-country route is the outcome of a meeting between delegates from the transport ministries of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand last December. The ministers agreed that each country would be responsible for the operations of buses on roads under its authority if the project came to fruition.

As well as the Ha Tinh-Thakhek-Nakhon Phanom-Bangkok bus route, the ministries also proposed establishing one linking Mukdahan in Thailand and Da Nang in Vietnam. Mukdahan is also on the banks of the Mekong and faces across to Savannakhet in Laos. The two are linked by the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge II.

12GO ASIA provides a comprehensive ticketing service for travel in Thailand and its neighbouring nations. Once the tri-country routes are operational, we expect to be able to add them to our portfolio.
