To Ranong, the Andaman and beyond

To Ranong, the Andaman and beyond

Ranong is probably one of Thailand’s least visited provinces, yet offers glimpses of the landscapes and culture of yesteryear. The province is sparsely populated and, as it endures a long rainy season every year, its mountains are covered in lush emerald-green forest.

Ranong Town is the perfect departure point for exploring the surrounding Andaman Sea coast as well as a jumping off point for trips to offshore islands or Kawthaung (Victoria Point) in Myanmar. Travellers have the option of flying, bus or a train-bus combination when visiting Ranong.

Nok Air flies to Ranong from Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport. Flight frequencies are once or twice a day and are dependent on the season. As Nok is a budget carrier, fares are not fixed. Depending on the class of vehicle, buses from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal take between six and nine hours.

An alternate option is to take a train from Bangkok to Chumpon and then switch to a bus for the final stretch of the journey to Ranong. The town’s main pier is the departure point for ferry and speedboat services to islands such as Koh Phayam, Koh Chang and Koh Surin.
