Local news reports state the three were nabbed at Ta Prohm Temple last Sunday and spent the night at police cells in Siem Reap. Late last week, prosecutor Keut Vannarareth said the trio had been questioned, but the presiding judge had still not made a decision over the incident.
This latest incident of foreign tourists being caught with their pants down at Cambodia’s holiest and most famous site is the fourth within the past six months. Earlier this year, on two separate occasions, three French nationals and two sisters from the US were fined, deported and declared persona non grata for pulling the same stunt.
Tourism official Ho Vandy says he does not understand the attraction of baring bottoms at a place Cambodians consider is enchanting and the embodiment of the country’s history. The Angkor Wat complex is administered by the Apsara Authority and spokesperson Sun Kerya says it is in the process of putting together a flyer listing ‘do nots’ for visitors.
