The first lady arrived in Seam Reap on 20 March and gave a speech to students in which she advised them to complete their schooling and also work towards greater freedom for the Cambodian people. The trip was endorsed on 3 March and was designated an essential and urgent one.
The US government released cost details of Mrs Obama’s Cambodian trip late last week. In total, officials and staff with the delegation utilised one conference room and five office suites in addition to five luxury suites and 85 rooms. The suites come with their own butlers.
The Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra is one of the best hotels in not only Seam Reap, but also in Cambodia. It is a pleasing fusion of French colonial and ancient Khmer architecture and décor.

US taxpayers are facing a bill of almost US$250,000 for their first lady’s recent trip to Cambodia. Michelle Obama only stayed at the swanky Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra in Seam Reap for two nights, but her US delegation booked rooms, suites and offices for 14 nights.
