The project will see the hill the temple sits on strengthened. This involves replacing some flagstones and installing a drainage system that will combat the natural erosion the hillock sustains during the annual rainy seasons. Conservationists say heavy traffic in this part of the city has literally shaken Wat Phnom’s foundations.
Spokesperson Dimanche explained that all the conveniences and amenities 21st century tourists and worshippers have come to expect will be installed to improve cleanliness and the complex’s general outlook. He finished off by saying initial assessments of the cost of the renovation were in the region of US$1 million.
The municipality is collaborating with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts on the restoration project. The ministry’s Norak Sathya said experts would ensure the revamp preserved Wat Phnom’s appearance.
