Vietnam to enlarge Nha Trang Airport

Vietnam to enlarge Nha Trang Airport

The director of the airport serving the Vietnamese town of Nha Trang says a second terminal will be built to ease passenger congestion. Phan Le Hoan said the current facilities at Cam Ranh Airport are stretched to breaking point and infrastructure cannot cope with a recent surge in annual passenger numbers.

The director expounded by saying the terminal was designed to handle a maximum of 1.5 million passengers a year. He continued by saying that last year Cam Ranh dealt with two million passengers and, judging by increasing numbers, the figure could hit four million in five years time.

The decision to add an extra terminal was the outcome of a meeting last week attended by delegates from Khanh Hoa Province and Vietnam Airlines. Initial estimates put the cost of the terminal at US$46 million and once open it will be a dedicated facility serving international flights.

Cam Ranh Airport is 35kms from downtown Nha Trang and a gateway to the town and Khanh Hoa’s pristine beaches. It is served by domestic carriers with services from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in addition to chartered and scheduled airlines operating flights from Russia, China and South Korea.
