Cambodian bus firm inaugurates luxury services

A new Cambodian bus operator has inaugurated luxury services on two routes out of Phnom Penh. City Link Transportation inaugurated routes to Siem Reap and Sihanoukville earlier this month which offer passengers amenities such as massaging seats and seat-back entertainment monitors.

At the launch ceremony, CEO Ho Vandy, told reporters the the company’s fleet would provide a higher degree of safety than those of other operators. He explained by saying drivers had been trained to obey the highway code and every passenger was covered by comprehensive insurance.

Mr Vandy said that despite both routes being served by several bus companies, he believed there was a niche for a more upmarket service and it would benefit Cambodian and foreign travellers alike. He continued by saying with fares between US$12 and US$14, City Link could not compete on price but would target discerning travellers who enjoyed the comforts of life.

Mr Vandy finished off by saying the service would be a boon when the ASEAN community gives more freedom of travel to citizens of member countries later this year. City Link also says it will launch international routes from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, the Thai capital of Bangkok and Pakse in southern Laos.

Cambodian Bus Association president Sok Chanmony said the fact over 30 companies now ran coach services was a testament to a growing market. However, he warned that he was not sure there was a need for higher priced luxury services at the present time.
