Mrauk U Myanmar – Best Value Hotels and Guesthouses
Compared with many other parts of Myanmar, Mrauk U has a surprisingly good number of hotels and guesthouses which means that you will have plenty of choice. Accommodation options start with budget rooms for around USD 10 and run to ‘resorts’ which are usually bungalows centred on a scenic garden. Still, if you have a flexible budget, you can often get better value for money by choosing one of the mid-range or upscale options.
Budget
One of the most famous and cheapest options in Mrauk U is the Golden Star Guesthouse (No. 116, Min Bar Gree Road) which is close to the scenic Thakan Hla Lake. This backpacker haunt has been in business for years although some travellers may now find it a little run down. You can get single, double, or triple rooms here which cost from USD 13-26, but don’t expect much in the way of amenities like working Wi-Fi.
Another option in this price range is the Royal City Guest House on Mini Ba Gyi Road close to the main jetty which has basic rooms, some of which come with private bathrooms. As this is quite a central location it is also rather noisy but rooms are cheap and come in at between USD 10-35.
If both of these are full you can also try the Prince Hotel where you can get bungalow-style rooms although these do not usually come with hot water. It is also a short bike ride away from the city center but if you are looking for a more serene atmosphere then this is a good choice. Rooms cost from USD 20-45.
Mid-Range
Those travelling with a flexible budget, especially couples and groups, may prefer to opt for a mid range hotel in Mrauk U as they are often far more comfortable.
One such choice is the Nawarat Hotel on Yangon-Sittwe Road which is also conveniently close to the main Shittaung Pagoda. The hotel has air conditioning and private bathrooms as well as televisions, and refrigerators. Rooms are not exactly spacious but they are clean and breakfast is included. Depending on the room you choose expect to pay between USD 38-60.
Another option in a similar price range is the Mrauk U Hotel which is also on Yangon-Sittwe Road and is opposite the Nawarat Hotel. Rooms costs between USD 30-50 and have air conditioning, private bathrooms, televisions, and fridges. There is also a large garden here which is a nice place to relax in the evenings. Guests should note that this is a government owned hotel rather than privately run by a local family.
One final choice in this price range (that accepts foreigners) is the Vesali Resort Hotel although ‘resort’ is perhaps a bit ambitious. Rooms cost between USD 35-45 and you can expect bungalow-style accommodation which includes breakfast.
Top Enf
One of the only real upscale options in Mrauk U is the Mrauk U Princess Resort in Aung Tat Yat. The hotel is conveniently located although is outside the centre of the city, but you can still easily visit all of Mrauk U’s attractions from here as long as you have transportation. If you are looking for a full range of hotel style amenities then this is a great choice and you will find room service, free Wi-Fi, televisions, and air conditioning. The hotel is built in the traditional style to blend in with the scenery and there is even a spa and gym on site. You will need to book in advance to secure a room here and prices fluctuate depending on the season so it is best to check with the hotel for the latest rates.
