Phonsavan Laos – Top Tourist Attractions and Things to Do

Phonsavan is nothing like what you’ve visited before. It is known as one of the most heavily bombed places in history, which is still visible until today. Nevertheless, what makes it an attraction point for so many tourists is the Plain of Jars, the stunning scenery, the countryside covered in pine forests and green hills.

1. Plain of Jars

We’ll start with the Plain of Jars, which is a conglomeration of stone jars diffused throughout the Xieng Khouang in Lao Highlands. The Plain of Jars carries historical and cultural meaning – archeologists assume that they date from the Southeast Asian Iron Age. When you visit the site, it feels almost surreal, as if you have reached a different era. As least that’s how we felt. There is a theory according to which the jars functioned as funerary urns, being used for holding cremated remains. The discovery of underground burial chambers supports this theory. It goes without saying that this gives the place a mystic vibe. The most popular sites are one, two and three since they are safe from unexploded ordnance. The first site hosts the biggest jar, while the second and third sites provide picturesque views over the local villages and farms. From our experience, one of the best ways of visiting the sites is by renting a motorbike. You can also reach the first site by bicycle. Alternatively, you could hire a jeep or van. The entrance fee is LAK10,000 (USD1.20) per site, while the parking fee is LAK2,000 (USD0.25). The sites are open every day from 9 am until 5 pm.

2. Tham Xang Caves

The Tham Xang Caves are also worth visiting, if you’re interested in nature and history alike. One of the caves was used as a hospital during the war. Nevertheless, apart from its historical meaning, the cave is unique due to its natural beauty.

There is a local tour guide service offered by the Hhmong community of Ban Ta. The caves are located 36 km away from Phonsavan.

3. Tad Lang Waterfall

If you want a truly unique experience, go to Tad Lang Waterfall, located near the third site of the Plain of Jars. To truly relish its wholesome beauty, we advise you to follow the trail to the bottom of the valley. It’s out-of-this-world. Still, bear in mind that it could be difficult to reach during the rainy season.

4. Nong Tang Lake

Another beautiful sight is Nong Tang Lake. It is a popular picnic and fishing site, and we like it because it’s colorful, full of life and vegetation. It is located 48km away from Phonsavan. If you feel like exploring the region’s unique natural wonders, we suggest you don’t miss visiting this spot.

5. Fresh food market

Food lovers will definitely like the fresh food market located behind the post office. You’ll find plenty to choose from: the colors, the scents, and the hustle typical of a fresh market constitute a typical vibe. Take it from us: when in Laos, don’t miss visiting these fresh food markets, as they are unique experiences.

6. Mines Advisory Group (MAG)

You should also stop by the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), which delivers significant work in deactivating UXO. Additionally, it also aims at informing and educating people. An informational display clearly highlights the way in which UXO affect the lives of the locals and the risks they pose. Each night, there are free films broadcasted, giving locals and visitors a chance to comprehend the situation in Phonsavan.

7. Muang Khoun

History buffs can go 35km Southeast of Phonsavan, where they’ll find Muang Khoun, which used to be the royal seat of the kingdom Xieng Khuang. Although the town is deserted, you’ll find the primary remainder of the kingdom’s foregone glory illustrated in an imposing, elegant Buddha image.

8. Tourism Office

On a final note, we recommend you to visit the Tourism Office, which is situated in the southwest part of the town. It should be open daily from 8 am until 11:30 am, and 1:20 pm until 4 pm. Still, we had to go there more than once to find it open. There, you can get some handy brochures about interesting and unique things you can do in Phonsavan.
