1. Conquer the summit of Mount Semeru

For the brave at heart who are seeking adrenaline, elevation and a truly memorable experience. Java’s tallest peak can be conquered in a 2-day 1-night hike for travellers who long for adventure, breathtaking views, and the endorphins following a strenuous and challenging trek. The reward for those who don their hiking boots is a night spent camping alongside the picturesque Lake Kumbolo, trekking in the open grassland of Oro-Oro Ombo, and a jaw-dropping sunrise over Java from the pinnacle of Mount Semeru on your last day of the journey. 4. Visit Sumberawan Temple

Nestled below the foothills of Mt Arjuna in the north east of Malang, lies the 14th century Buddhist temple, Sumberwan. Getting to this temple requires you to trek through marshy rice fields and cross a river - a truly spectacular journey in itself. Constructed with andesite stone, the temple is a rather plain building that contains no stairs, statues or reliefs; but what it lacks in grandiosity, it makes up for in beautiful surrounds and a natural pool that is believed to contain healing properties. This is a great outing for travellers who enjoy cultural sights or even just for those who enjoy tranquil and picturesque environments in scenic, rural settings.

5. Explore Kidal Temple

Yet another special temple to explore while in Malang is, Kidal Temple. Constructed around 1248, this ancient Hindu temple is 20 kilometres from Malang in the small village of Rejokidal and is well worth the visit. The temple is made up of three levels that are all built onto a raised platform and is believed to be the oldest shrine in Java. Beautifully ornate and shrouded in myth and legend, the temple is covered with intricate cravings and reliefs etched and chiselled into the andesite stone with three Javanese masks depicting the story of Garuda (a bird-like creature) at the foot of the monument.

6. Take a million photographs at Coban Rais

Situated around 16 kilometres away from Malang, Coban Rais is a photographers dream location. From rolling green hills, to a 20-meter high waterfall and panoramic views with spectacular scenery, this location is an absolute treat for travellers who love views, nature and taking cute, fun photographs. Aside from the waterfall and raw, exquisite beauty, Coban Rais also boasts plenty of photo opportunities for travellers, Instagrammers or content creators hoping to get a few interesting snaps. The students decided to do this by painting bright, colourful murals and painting the outside of houses with vibrant colours and as a by-product of this idea, Jodipan is now a prime photo opportunity for travellers looking to stand at viewpoints of this unique rainbow village. The most popular sights in Lampung Warna Warni are Embong Brantas Bridge, the old, wooden train tracks, a flower archway staircase, underneath the colourful umbrellas suspended above the main complex; and the 3D paintings.

9. Get lost in a labyrinth!

Located inside the Coban Rondo Park lies the stunning, 60-meter Coban Rondo Waterfall and a fun walking labyrinth-style hedge maze on the slopes of Mount Panderman. Other activities and sights within the park include pony riding, bicycling, a shooting range, archery, gorgeous viewpoints, deer, and wild monkeys. The lush, fragrant hills dotted with the triangle hats of the tea-pickers hard at work and the one cannot help but feel a sense of calm as you walk among the perfectly planted crops.
