Beijing China – Best Hostels, Hotels and Resorts to Stay
There are more than 4000 hotels in Beijing so with that many places to stay it should be easy for you to find the right accommodation for you. Read on to find out about a selection of hotels and hostels that could be right for you on your next visit.
Budget Accommodation in Beijing
There are lots of hostels and cheap hotels in the centre of Beijing and if you are close to lots of attractions you do not have so much time wasted on travelling. We will begin with a hostel we can personally recommend just over 4km from Tiananmen Square.
The Red Lantern House Hostel on Zhengjue Hutong, Xinjie Kou, in Xicheng district of Beijing. We stayed here for a little over two weeks on our first ever visit to China in the summer of 2007. It is a great hostel tucked away in the hutongs amongst the one time homes of royalty and nobility. The hostel was once a courtyard house of Zhengjue Temple and retains much of its original structures. A bed in a dorm room will cost from CNY110 sharing with 5 other people. A private en-suite room big enough for three people cost from CNY339.99 per night.
Another hostel we have stayed at in Beijing is the Leo Hostel located at A Lai Ke Zhan, Da Zha Lan Xi Jie, Qianme, Beijing and just 750 metres from Tiananmen Square. It is another great hostel but a little difficult to find the first time on arrival into Beijing. It has a great location so close to the centre of the city with lots of good choices of where to eat close by. It costs from CNY90 for a bed per night in a 4 bed dorm room. Private en-suite twin or double rooms cost from CNY320 per night.
There are hundreds of two star hotels in Beijing with many offering double or twin rooms from under CNY100 per night, but they are not licensed for receiving foreign guests. If you are in the city you could try this as an option but you will normally find that none of the staff speak anything but Chinese.
The Hanting Hotel Beijing Tiantan Wenquan is in Dongcheng District on Guangming West Road. This three star hotel has free WiFi, all rooms are non-smoking, a restaurant on site, a fitness centre, a business centre with wheelchair access. There is a choice of double or twin rooms and family rooms that can accommodate two small children. Rooms in this hotel are available from CNY246 per night.
If you require a cheap 3 star hotel for an overnight stay close to the airport this is probably the best deal you will find. The Airport Tianyuan Hotel Beijing Airport is about ten minutes by free shuttle bus from the airport and these buses operate at all hours to pick you up or drop you off at the airport. All rooms are non-smoking and air conditioned with free breakfast included. The breakfast is a Chinese style breakfast and not to the taste of most western visitors. One downside to this hotel is the room entry card is required to operate the electrics in the room; it is also required to operate the elevator. If there are two of you sharing a room you only get one card, so if one person wants to go downstairs the other is left in the dark. It costs from CNY178 per night to stay here.
Mid-Range Hotels in Beijing
There are lots of choices of hotels in the mid-range of better quality 3 star and 4 star hotels in Beijing, here is a selection.
The Dong Chang’an Hotel is in Chaoyang district on Jianguo Menwai Street next to the Yonganli subway stop and opposite the Silk Street Market, so it is in a very good location for getting about the city easily. The 82 rooms available in this hotel are priced between CNY349 and CNY425; all rooms have free high speed internet and air conditioning included.
The 136 room Hanting Seasons Beijing Wangfujing has standard rooms available priced from CNY254 up to CNY336 which includes free high speed internet and air conditioning in all rooms. This hotel is located on the busy Wangfujing Street so you are right in the heart of one of Beijing’s busiest shopping areas and close to one of its major food streets. You are also very close to the subway with the nearest stop just a few metres away from the hotel.
For your stay in Beijing you could try renting a room or just a bed in a private apartment, there are hundreds of apartments set up in the city for this type of traveller and a 3 bedroom apartment right next to Wangjing Subway station on lines 14 and 15 will cost from CNY173 per person each night. It is cheaper than many hotels, and you are free to use the kitchen if you prefer to cook and not rely on restaurants. This apartment complex overlooks Wangjing Park, has 24 hour security and beautiful gardens. Inside the apartment there is a large living room equipped with comfortable seating an LCD TV and of course, high speed internet.
The Maoer Hutong Courtyard Hostel in Beijing can be a little misleading when approaching for the first time due to its location in one of the hutongs of the city. It is located along Mao’er Hutong off Di’anmen Outer Street in Beijing. It is listed as a hostel when in fact it is a luxury hotel and staying here overnight will cost from CNY787. Inside the walls and this courtyard hostel of 20 rooms has plenty of outside space where guests can sit and relax while drinking tea. You are just 200 metres from Houhei Lake where you can rent a boat and spend an enjoyable afternoon. The Confucian temple is close by as are several restaurants and bars.
Luxurious Hotels in Beijing
Beijing’s range of luxury hotels may not be as expensive as you would expect, as there are so many hotels in the city out of the high season they have to use big discounts to remain busy so this could be the best time for you to grab a bargain.
We will begin with the Zhongle Six Star Hotel located at Fangqunyuan, Fangzhuang, Fengtai district. This hotels name is a little misleading, the six star is not its rating but ‘six stars’ is seen as a lucky symbol in China, it is actually a 5 star hotel and will cost from CNY698 up to CNY782 for one night’s stay. It has free WiFi, rooms are air conditioned and all rooms are non smoking. The breakfast has some variety and is more palatable than most Chinese breakfasts for foreign guests.
The Shangri-la Hotel is located in Haidian district of Beijing, it is ideally placed for the leading universities as well as the business and financial centre’s. It is a 5 star non-smoking hotel equipped with restaurants and a pool. It has 670 rooms and a standard room costs from CNY857 up to CNY1770.
If you want the ultimate in luxury during your stay in Beijing you should try the Bulgari in Chaoyang district. A single night here for two people will cost you from CNY2862. It is a beautifully designed hotel and the most luxurious of the newer hotels to have been built in Beijing. It is a little outside of my price range though. A superior room is over CNY3000 per night.
