Sapa to Luang Prabang Destination Reviews

There were 2 buses, the first one was a bit chaotic, it was a local bus, but they let us stay in the back seats, which were completely flat. Fortunately the bus was not crowded, in that case we wouldn't fit on those flat seats with 2 more people. The second bus was a mini van and the driver was so impolite, he stopped every 2 minutes buying things in the village before going to the border. After crossing the border, the driver was absent and let us wait in the mini van over one hour. None knew where he was. At the end we arrived to our destination 3 hours late.

The bus picked us up very late, around 8 PM. The women at the ticket office were quite rude. They didn’t speak at all and ignored our questions. We paid for two sleeper cabins and boarded the bus. The lady told us we had to crawl into one cabin together. Many cabins were free and weren’t even full at the end of our journey. It seemed like they were just trying to annoy tourists. In Dien Bien Phu, we changed to a local yellow bus that crossed the border. Make sure you get your passport stamped in Hanoi at the Laos embassy. Only a few countries are allowed to enter Laos Visa-Free. They won’t accept evisas at this land border. Two British tourists were denied entry because they had an evisa. The Vietnamese officers wouldn’t let them out. Border crossing was easy. Make sure you exchange money right with the Vietnamese immigration officers, as the Laos officers will require 10K Kip for entry. It’s an official fee, and you’ll get a receipt. In Laos, we drove a lot and made many stops to deliver parcels. Six hours into Laos, at about 3 PM, the driver stopped in Muang Xai. He gave some money to a tuc tuc driver and drove us to the railway station. The driver bought us train tickets and we got to Luang Prabang by train. The driver told us he was too tired to drive further, understandably for the long distance and the bad roads. But he was really nice that he bought the train tickets for us.

The bus picked us up 3 hours late. The ticket office didn't tell us the time so we had to keep waiting. Finally we arrived in Luang Prabang at 9pm. There was no proper guidance when changing buses, crossing the border, and stopping at rest areas. Maybe it would be wise to take the train from Muang Xai. Thanks to the two drivers who drove safely.

Our route was supposed to be sapa 18:30 - Luang Prabang 18:30 the next day. Which didn’t differ too much from actualities. We were told the bus would be at 19:00 earlier in the day (we can only assume the 18:30&19:00 departure buses are the same) We left Sapa at 19:30 on a sleeper coach (no toilets). We then stopped in Lai Chau at 22:30 for 40 mins. Got to Dien Bien Phu bus station at 04:30. Got into a local yellow Luang Prabang bus (no toilets either) that didn’t leave until 07:15. We arrived at the Vietnam border at 08:40 and were through in 20 minutes. If you had any Vietnamese Dong left over they could change it to Lao Kip for you. Arrived at Lao immigration 10 minutes after this and we were through in 30 mins. We had our passports stamped in Hanoi already. (US$1 each as we didn’t have any Kip for stamp duty otherwise it was 10,000 Kip each) We had a lunch stop at Pak Nam Nov at 12:00. Arrived in Luang Prabang at 19:30 with no more official stops, just stops for delivering parcels.

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
