Kathmandu to Pokhara Destination Reviews

최성국
The staff’s service was truly excellent. However, I noticed that the online bus images and the actual buses were quite different. It would be much better if the company showed the real condition of every vehicle honestly, respecting the consumer’s right to choose. As a foreigner who loves Nepal, I believe that small, honest actions like this can gradually raise the overall awareness of the Nepalese people. Transparency not only builds trust with customers but also contributes to a stronger image of Nepal as a welcoming destination.

I took this ride based on other reviews and in my experience it could have been better. First off when I asked which bus they were they wouldn't say. I stood there asking the same person repeatedly until I saw my name in their list. Second, even though there was space on the bus to sit in a side seat, they put me to the back. It seems foreigners sit in the back despite what they pay, and despite them getting on at the start of the route. But in my case when another woman foreigner got on she was allocated the seat I requested. The guy who did this and had refused me spent much of the journey staring at me knowing, I believe, that he was in the wrong. 3rd, there was a break within an 40 minutes of the ride, then 3 more stops. Stops are good, but getting people to pee on the side of the road because you stayed too long elsewhere was not cool. And the lunch break was so long that all the passengers were outside looking for the drivers. The gist is, it could have been better. It was a bumpy ride on the backseat and they don't decline so if you pay for that, forget it. Thankfully the power sockets worked. The most important thing is they got us to our destination safe, only 30 minutes later than advertised and water was available. I guess the most epic part of the journey was when 2 foreigners made a run for 2 free seats a space ahead. The seat allocator shouted them out and to the back when 2 locals refused to look at the backseats as an alternative. Such drama equates to an adventure. I wish the company well...and anyone else who travels with them.

The van was supposed to leave Kathmandu at 1 p.m. I arrived at the bus stop at 12 p.m. and told the two staff members that I was going to grab something to eat and would be right back. I left my trolley with them behind the counter. Shortly after, I received a call from the driver asking where I was, and he ended by saying he’d be at the bus stop at 1 p.m. When I returned to the bus stop shortly after, my trolley was gone. The staff said it was already in the van, which would be back in five minutes. The van arrived more than forty minutes later. I suspect it had made a tour through Kathmandu to pick up more passengers, because when I booked the day before, almost all the seats had been available, and now the van was full. The trip took nearly two hours longer than indicated at the time of booking. The ride itself was fine; the driver and co-driver were super nice. There were a few breaks, and the van kept stopping along the way to look for more passengers to fill the empty seats whenever someone got off.

The seats are actually quite comfortable. The ride is very bumpy. Fans only worked for the first 30 minutes then it became very hot. They stop every hour for the toilet and they turn the lights on and once they also started playing music. Also they had stopped for over half an hour.

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
