Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat Destination Reviews

The bus left on time. I was comfortable, but only because I'm 5'4". Wouldn't have wanted to be much taller. Didn't get any sleep because the driver was frequently beeping and talking with his buddy. We arrived early and it was great getting dropped off at my hotel upon arrival into Da Lat.

There was no one anyone was getting any sleep on this sleeper bus, the driver was driving like a maniac and obviously didn't understand how to drive properly, instead of slowing down gradually coming upto a traffic light or a turning he would slam the brakes on, my ankles were bruised from the repeated slamming of brakes, he also seemed to speed up going round corners, thus being almost thrown out of the bed or slammed into the window, the driver also honked every 5 seconds when there was no traffic on the road and drove on the cats eyes for almost the entire journey. There was also no toilet on this bus, the driver was very rude when we asked if it was our stop, even using Google translate he just said he doesnt speak English and refused to look at the phone. This is not an option for a night's accommodation with travel, better off travelling in the day, we also arrives 1.5 hours early because he was speeding so much, very uncomfortable journey.

I missed my bus but the people at the office kindly arranged for free, the next bus! This was my fault as 12go stated arrive 30 minutes early as first bus is a transit bus which takes you to the sleeper or cabin bus I arrived 20 minutes early! Had I arrived 30 minutes early, I would still have missed the transit bus! The lady in the bus office told me I should have been there 1 hour before! 12go should clearly state the transit bus is the actual start time of the journey & arrive 1 hour before.

Staff were generally helpful despite our language barrier and bus was clean and well maintained. Personally found bed a bit uncomfortable but that’s because I sleep on my side so style of bed wasn’t ideal - think this is the same as most sleeper buses though - and blanket, pillows and bottled water all provided. We made 2 stops for toilet in 6 hours and bus driver pointed toilets out on both occasions. Bus departed late but arrived ahead of schedule and staff came and got us personally when bus arrived for pick up as they were aware we didn’t understand the Vietnamese announcements in bus station. Overall, very impressed.

Bought the sleeper bus from Ho Chi Minh to Da Lat. The information was a little confusing when booking - there’s no ticket vendor at the bus station. You just wait in a glass waiting room (as directed in a picture they send you). Luckily I had some locals at the bus stop help me/show me! Then the bus driver finds you and ticks your name off. I didn’t speak any Vietnamese but the drivers were SO lovely and used their iPhone to translate. The drivers were so accommodating and kind to a traveller like me. And the sleeper bus was top notch! Clean, comfortable. Free water. Not crowded. There was a Food break at a restaurant for 30minutes during the trip so you can buy some Pho or snacks. Then when I got to Da lat bus station, they transferred me to my hostel in a little van. Fantastic!

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
