Ha Giang to Quang Ninh Destination Reviews

i got picked up around the estimated time. The bus itself was clean as usual. we stopped often to deliver packages and they were pretty loud in the front considering that it's a sleeper bus. I didn't have a blanket for the first one and a half hours and it was really cold i was wondering if the others have a blanket, yes they did, then i asked the assistant "hellor sir can i please have a blanket" and he said yeah 10 minutes because a other woman had to go to the toilet really urgently and he thought i'm asking for the toilet, then i said no i would like a blanket and he fucking ignored me even though I repeatedly said sir, hello, please, like wtf, he for sure heard me. Then I tabbed another guy and asked him and he brought me one. The communication was quite rude and not clear.

Bus was fine, driver wasn't. Worst ride in 5 months of South East Asia so far. The driver was probably drunk or on some other drugs. He was swerving all over the road and driving like a maniac the whole time. Several near-accidents. Plus 10–15 stops where one of the drivers picked up some stuff from women (maybe money? No idea). There was definitely more going on than just a bus ride.

The bus was full of people in the alley so very noisy, not great to sleep And the bus dropped us at the wrong spot, we had to take a 10min taxi to finish the trip that the bus was supposed to make.

The main issue was that we had no way of contacting the operator. The pdf showed conflicting info as to the location of the place, and so we were very unsure. The operator was late, so we were afraid we had missed the bus.

It was a great bus ride. They also picked us up at the hostel which was very convenient. We only arrived two hours earlier then the planned time, which was a bit annoying as we arrived now in the middle of the night and had to organize a hotel last minute because of it. That was the only downside.

We booked the overnight 'sleeper' bus. Herded on like cattle, bus drivers on route to Hanoi talking extremely loudly for much of it so sleep was difficult. Hanoi to Ha Long, we were placed at the back of the Limousine on the only non reclining seats despite it being 5am and us travelling all night. Everyone else boarded on route. We were told we must have paid for 'budget' seats despite never being given an option. Impossible to sleep so arrived at Ha Long utterly exhausted with 3 hours sleep.

The bus actually picked us up at our hotel which was nice. The ride was ok. Transferred to the limousine was short but my daughter had to sit on my lap for lack of space. The limousine ride was fine. Dropped us off sort of in the middle of a road but it was easy to get a grab from there to our cruise.

We were extremely disappointed and frustrated by this bus journey. The management was absolutely disastrous from start to finish. First, when we boarded the bus, the manager told us to sit at the very back, even though there were no assigned seats. I explained that I was unwell and asked politely if I could sit at the front, but the manager rudely refused and insisted that we sit at the back, despite the bus being completely empty at that time. Later, some Vietnamese passengers boarded and were allowed to sit wherever they wanted, even though they also had no seat numbers. The seats I had requested at the front remained empty the entire time. On top of this, the service on the bus was unacceptable: there was no water, the power outlets didn’t work, the seats could not be reclined, and the Wi-Fi barely functioned. The situation got worse when we were poorly informed about the next steps of the journey. We had to take a taxi to another “limousine” bus. By then, we hadn’t been able to use a restroom for over three hours, and when we kindly asked the driver if we could stop, he rudely said “no.” Again, he insisted we sit at the very back, even though there were ten available seats and we were only three passengers. I explained again that I was sick, but he ignored this and forced us to the back. Soon after, another Vietnamese passenger without a ticket boarded and was free to sit wherever he liked. Finally, to make things worse, upon arrival we were transferred to another shuttle to reach our hotel. The driver tried to scam us by demanding 200,000 VND. When we called the hotline for assistance, they were completely unhelpful and seemed complicit. Only when we took a photo of the vehicle did the driver finally leave, clearly afraid of being reported. Overall, this was an extremely negative and stressful experience. We feel scammed, mistreated, and deeply disappointed.

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
